Behavior and communication: What’s your role?
- Be a detective. Think about why the person might be exhibiting challenging behaviors. Is he/she trying to tell you that they are frustrated, in pain or bored? Put yourself in the person’s shoes.
- Respect that all people need to communicate in order to express themselves, be understood, and have control over their environments.
- Think about how you would feel if you were unable to speak or write and had to develop another means of communication. What would you do to let others know when you didn’t want to do something?
